How many good years did AEW have?
I think AEW had one good year. May 2019 to May 2020. Cody winning the TNT title is, in my opinion, the exact moment the wheels started falling off the bus. What say you, /pw/?

Agreed.
What it had early on was excitement, with the prospect that it might become good. Which is why it had so much energy behind it.
With every year of failing to live up to that prospect, the energy died down and the viewership started tuning out.

I'm the person you responded to.
Honestly, I don't watch anything regularly. I prefer Japanese wrestling over American because I prefer action over talking. Here and there I'll watch Stardom because I find it the most watchable promotion at the moment (it's not that women's wrestling is better, just that I find it an easier watch if that makes sense). I keep tabs on New Japan and NOAH... I like AJPW in bursts but no English at all makes it hard to watch long term.

There was a lot of buzz around AEW for a while, enough that someone who was lapsed for a time like me started hearing things. They got Sting, they got Punk, they got Jericho, they're making a video game, they're a bit more violent and vulgar than WWE at the time. Now all of that sounded super appealing on paper. I never watched Dynamite but I remember thinking I'd give the game a try at some point and hopefully check the show out. Then all of the shit started happening CM Punk walked out, game dropped to abysmal reviews, Sting retired. After that happened, it feels like a lot of the mainstream attention the company was getting died. They still had a few feuds every now and again I'd hear about but I'd only hear about them from people whose primary hobby is wrestling.

Tony Khan has destroyed the free speech of indy wrestlers. Promoters are now scared to book wrestlers who have badmouthed AEW/Khan because it may cost that promotion both present AND future opportunities to book AEW talent. He continues to block/pull talent from shows, not just from CMLL/Stardom/NJPW but completely random promotions that have booked AEW talent and have Tony-hating talent on the same show

>"They can work the indies if they sign with AEW"
this single phrase has made 99% of indy wrestlers without a direct path to WWE feel compelled to never say a bad word about AEW's Cult Leader. You can say anything you want about CM Punk, Cody, Eddie Kingston, Triple H, Brock Lesnar, IYO Sky, literally anyone except Tony Khan and you can still be booked on the indies

And then AEW fans wonder why indy wrestlers keep signing with WWE, even for less money.
