I kept up the running until exam season hit, but I slacked off on the exams midway and aimed for being a comedian instead. Actually, I entered the preliminaries for an M-1 aimed at high schoolers. There was a 'student comedian' category, and I competed in a tournament where kids like that gathered. During summer break of my third year, I passed the prelims and went to Tokyo twice, ended up focusing on comedy and slacking on exams. I had signed up for summer cram school but didn't go at all... My parents were super worried. But I was only thinking about entering a training school, so I quit exams and said I'd work part-time to save money. Back then, my material was about the culture shock I felt coming from Niigata to Tokyo. Like, things were this way in Niigata, but common sense is different in Tokyo—stuff like that, though I don't remember the details at all (laughs)."
