However, her parents were against it, so she decided to join the Self-Defense Forces. After training her mind and body for a year and a half, she applied for the Stardom audition and was accepted with flying colors. Now, Ema Maishima is being hailed as a promising newcomer. This is the second of a three-part interview delving into the secrets of Maishima's physique, who made her debut in May of this year. In this part, she talks about her training as a Self-Defense Forces member and how she rekindled her desire to become a professional wrestler.

Becoming a member of the Self-Defense Forces would seem to require an incredible amount of physical strength, but the enlistment process itself consists of a written test, an interview, and a physical examination, and no rigorous physical tests were required.

>"At the entrance exam stage, there are no push-up or running tests. So I passed the written test and interview, and after graduating from high school I joined the Ground Self-Defense Force. First, I went to a training unit for six months where I was taught the basics of the Self-Defense Forces. I spent the first three months in Shiga and the next three months in Aichi, and then I was assigned to a garrison in Kansai, which was my preferred location. Were we in the same year? The ratio of men to women was 8:2 to 9:1 overall, so it was all boys... But I might not be as popular as people think (laughs)."

What was Self-Defense Force training like for Ema Maishima, who was a complete club member who went home after school?

>"On the first day, I thought I couldn't do it (laughs). It was the first time I'd been away from my parents, and on top of that, I'd been living in a room with nine other people. I'm the middle child of three sisters, so it was a bit much... Also, we were told not to walk more than three steps at a time. If you were to walk more than three steps, you had to run. Wherever we went, group action was the norm, so we all got up early in the morning, got changed quickly, and moved around at a fast pace. In the beginning, we were taught the basics, such as a code of conduct and etiquette, and it felt like our stamina was improving along with that. We got up at 6am and had classes until 5pm. The meals were like school lunches, and they were delicious. They were so delicious that I looked forward to them every day. But we had to eat within 10 minutes and then get ready for training."

Maishima, doing push-ups and sit-ups was so natural that she didn't think of it as training. Although there was no live ammunition, they also did training in which they moved toward enemy positions while preparing for a gunfight.

>"We all had to do push-ups and sit-ups until our superiors gave the OK, as we were all responsible for them. The training was written on a schedule, but even though it said 'general training' there was no detailed information, so we didn't know what kind of training we were going to get beforehand. We also had training where we had to carry heavy loads in backpacks and walk 25km along mountain paths. And if we didn't pass the physical fitness test, our grades would suffer, so our hopes for assignment would be lowered...I heard that although I was on the small side (156cm), my grades were above average."

As she lived her life as a member of the Self-Defense Forces, Maishima began to feel differently than when she first joined the force.

>"Honestly, the first six months were my youth. I wanted to quit on the first day, but it was an incredibly fun time, especially because we all shared the same food and went through the same difficult experiences. I wasn't in any club activities, so it was the first time I'd done the same thing as everyone else, and I really grew to like everyone. When it came time for the promotion exam, I wondered whether to continue as a SDF officer or become a professional wrestler. I'd always loved professional wrestling, but it's true that my desire to do it had gradually faded, and I thought that if I continued as a SDF officer I would be stable and happy. But once I took the exam, there was no going back, and there were so many people working to get me promoted. So I remembered the job I originally wanted to be, because you only live once..."

In August 2023, Maishima took part in Stardom's Cinderella audition. This audition requires self-promotion, so what did Maishima do?

>"I really couldn't think of anything like that... The other candidates did dances or brought pictures they had drawn, but I simply conveyed my feelings, saying, 'I joined the Self-Defense Forces and trained hard, and I really want to become a professional wrestler.'"
