For what it is worth, I didn't really want Nakamura either for a similar reason. In an optimal world it would have been Shibata cleared to compete in NJPW again, but we don't live in that world. As is, it could have been a current NJPW top-carder like Goto, hell it could have been EVIL with Tana going out with a win or EVIL either "spoiling" his retirement or beating him while coming back to the right way of doing things. It could have been a changing of the guard to Uemura or it could have been the Gifu match vs Tsuji at a bigger show. I'm not going to sit here and say Tana should have been pinned clean at the dome by Murashima or something, but this reminds me of Muto's last match against Naito, drew a great house for NOAH but did absolutely nothing for the promotion long-term because Naito fucked off back to NJPW.

Tana's retirement will already be the highest-drawing show of the year, they are trading an extra 3,000人 now for losing 500人 on every major show and 100人 on every minor show from not having the longer term rub.
If NJPW wants to become a company that is entirely about Wrestle Kingdom and maybe Dominion/G1 Climax Final and barely limps along the rest of the year then the last few years' worth of decision making is the way to go about it, but if you don't have a strong showing the rest of the year then the aura of WK/Dom/G1 will fade anyway.

The worst case scenario for New Japan at this point would be to have Takeshita win.
