It has been 100 years since ancient beings, known as the Old Ones, walked the Earth with their two strong feet. Now they are gone and we animals now rule the remains that they left behind. With our new knowledge of sword and sorcery, we were able to survive in peace for a while, but then came the three factions.
The Apes: Strong giants, claiming to be as just as the old ones and believe they should be the ones to rule over the new world.
The Pigs: An intellectual but slothful group who wish to rule the world with an iron hoof and remain kings while the others remained as dumb animals.
Then there the Lizards: A fast and large group that want to set the world a blaze. Trying to forget the harsh past that the old ones left.
All three sides wishing to go war and destroy one another to bring in what they believe to be true peace.
But, unbeknownst to everyone, there was another group. One that was trying their best to find a way to heal everyone. To bring back order.
You found it.... and now you are taking care of it.

A D&D Homebrew Adventure.

"Stay safe Kinny. Join us when you can." Mog breathed after him, his back already turning to run back towards the prison.

Seeing that the apes had thinned out over the course of the brawl, Mog dashed up behind them without a word to Ursus. Drawing and slashing in two quick motions, he went to hamstring the simians.

Hmm so you see a king to lord over his people instead of guide and protect them, is he so mean as to hide behind thugs? Or does he merely want power for powers sake to lord that over his people to be the one to kick back down those who try to reach his place instead of helping others to achieve such feats or even greater than that? And to you warrior you where bred to be used? To be discarded instead of given other ways to learn and advance? Other avenues of progression torn from you because a king wanted what? Living decorations? Thugs who he deemed expendable? And I suppose you believe in a might makes right form of rulership not taking into account the other forms of power from technological to sociological, you chose the easy way and not considered how big a fall you are setting yourself up for.
What’s say you warrior bred to be dispossessed over petty squabbling, do you still believe to let those people of the same mortal flesh as you dictate your own lot in life?

That was the issue with his lupine form, unfortunately. It was troublesome to do anything but slash with his sword. His strikes had the tendency to catch on the side armour of whoever he was attacking, even when behind his opponent. Luckily Ursus was distracting the wretch with his cultural inquiries. Waste of words, and breathe, were it not for its battle utility. Mog knew these elite guards to be dyed in wool ultraroyalists, the nation, all nation's will, was that of the King, who was the mightiest animal. They knew nothing else. Though that begged the question of their technological sophistication and Clayton's interest in the 'ultimate soldier' (humans), perhaps there were other apes of intellectual and moral fibre, or maybe it was a simple matter of their advantageous physical form, so similar to the humans...

No matter! There was a fight ongoing! Mog shook his musings away, he had a plan. Stepping behind the ape yet again, he put his paw into the crook of the back of the ape's knee, climbing the beast, up his back and onto his massive shoulders. Now, having balanced on top of the elite guard, he struck at head level, aiming for the guard's neck. He'd sever the ape's neck from his shoulders in one blow!

Mog rode the ape down to the ground, the titanic simian throwing up a cloud of dust as he was laid low. Standing victoriously over the beaten foe, he crowed in satisfaction. Slashing the straps of the apes armour, he then quickly sheathed his sword and hefted the apes elephant tusk onto his shoulder, testing its weight and balance, feeling out any magical properties.

As he did that, he motioned to Ursus, then back to the armour he'd cut off the guard "Hey, Ursus, think you can equip the prisoners with the armour? If not as armour because of the cut straps, then as shields?"

Mog was slightly taken aback at the apologetic bear "Never apologize for speaking your heart, friend. Though sometimes you are as subtle as an ox and my heart bleeds for it, really you and I are of the same mind. It is just that you are more outspoken, whereas I have lived to see ideals crushed underpaw, mine, and others. Religious doctrine and the old ways clash in my mind with a more forward thinking reality too, I'm old and stuck in my ways. But, what you said is right, and everyone ought know it. When dealing with friends, or the political opposition, rather than enemies, you could stand to ease off, but I'm hardly one to talk. If nothing else, your speeches make for great distractions, hahaha!"

He then looked away from Ursus, lest his eyes be blinded by the blazing bear's soul. Turning, he followed the bear's gaze and surveyed the battlefield for dead and wounded, and signs of reinforcements or ongoing struggle.

I can always use my spells after a night's rest if I fail.

Frowning at the chaos in the embassy courtyard, Mog realised the fight was far from over. The prisoner's numbers, at least those above ground that he could see, had thinned considerably. The chimps outnumbered the riotous chained masses, and they were armed and armoured to boot. The other two elite guards he'd spotted earlier were nowhere to be seen, nor was the fourth, or the generals.

Looking meaningfully at Ursus, Mog motioned towards the crowd. He kicked over an armoured plate from the dead gorilla to Ursus. They had to join the fray. He'd leave the arming of the rebels to Ursus, he needed to be in the heat of battle, to turn the tide.

Maybe you could take June to the temple, since the good doctor still needs her to come up with a cure, while leaving Hogar for the police (you'd have to alert them so that they arrive before the ape special forces)? Though, I imagine wolf police aren't known for their tact when dealing with violent mentally deranged individuals, especially not one afflicted with literal hate!squid magic crystal bullshit. So, I dunno, up to you. Likewise with Kuma, he's cured, but he also may still have loyalties to the forest guardians, which is better than over the forest cultists they turned into. Ursus asked for casualties, so are these numbers dead and wounded? The inclusion of 1 dead gorilla makes it seem like there is only one dead creature and the rest are the numbers of those still fighting. Is the riot still ongoing? Who is winning, how many on each side are still standing? There were 3 (now 2) gorillas before, and I think I remember there being 4 initially when we first entered the prison. Either way, if the fighting is still ongoing, I wanna do as I said here >>6246324 and rejoin the fight, preferably seeking out another gorilla to slay. It is up to Ursus, but I think he's gonna do as I suggested and equip the prisoners with pieces of armour from the dead gorilla, to use as shields/armour.

Landing awkwardly on the ground, he struggled up on his bum leg and heaved his club sideways, aiming to smash the gorilla's knees and trip the guard over instead. The paladin would bring the gorilla down to earth instead of reaching for the sky. With luck, a crushing blow to the head would soon follow.

"Praise the Goddess! All hail the crimson moon, all hail the high priestess of the great sidereal mirror, her majesty the queen! Victory, victory is ours! Glory to the victors and woe to the vanquished! Let a blood moon rise, let the pale ichor of creation drip from her ancient orifices, let the nectar of souls flood the river valleys! Let her twin sister, the earthly creatrix, feast upon the marrow of the bones of the lives wasted here in criminal ignorance! All hail the twin Goddesses, all hail the pale and the green!" Mog screamed at the top of his lungs as he mashed the gorillas face in again, and again, and again.

Mog's wolf heart filled with joy to see prey scatter before him, only the lone cowed gorilla remained. Yet he hesitated, were the gorilla's last words the ramblings of a dying creature, or a cunning ploy to goad the strongest among them into a baited blow or sneaky trap? He held off and analyzed his surroundings, then the gorilla himself.

Mog laughed, then jeered back "A hundred of us? Buddy, you can't even beat ONE of us!"

Looking over his shoulder at Ursus with good cheer, he said "Help yourself to the gorilla's clubs, they're pretty handy."

Then without warning he charged forth, to duel the last gorilla.

The battle was over, and the prisoner's freedom secure. Now all that was left was to siege down the embassy slay the remaining guards and special forces, so that they'd have no pull in the city. The generals would make fine witnesses and hostages. But first, an arrogant monkey had to be put in its place.

"Clayton's generals should still be inside the embassy. With your help, we could storm the building, get both justice and vengeance in one fell swoop. We only need one hostage to testify before the queen and the people, two maybe, for redundancy. Should any of you be too badly injured to continue, or just want to return to your homes and see familiar faces, then those of you who are citizens of the lizard nation should see Lincoln at the hotel, and those of you who are of foreign nations should seek your respective embassies. If you are from Canus Lupin, then crossing the square outside to notify the queen and any passing citizens of what the apes have done here should satisfy your duty, I'm sure you know your way home after that. If her majesty should be busy, then notify the police. The hotel is under diplomatic guard though, so those of you seeking Lincoln may have trouble accessing him, though I imagine sufficient racket outside should be enough to attract his attention. If any of you lack funds, or means of shelter in the meantime, the temple is open and attended by a deer named Adler, a friend. Just stay on the upper levels. Now who's with me, we've a embassy to storm!" Mog trotted out instructions quickly in response.

He picked up some scattered armour and passed them to the big croc, since he seemed the most eager for a fight. The message was clear, take up arms, and take justice for themselves.

No, we head inside the embassy (this building) to kill/capture the 3 generals. Last thread you said there were 3 generals inside attending a meeting. I think you may have gotten the elite guards confused with the generals, because we only fought 3 gorillas with tusks, but according to last thread, there were 4 elite guards with elephant tusks that were trained by Clayton, and 3 separate generals inside.

"How about this instead? You surrender and testify as to your evil deeds here in Canis Lupin and across the land in front of the queen and the people, or we'll kill you and leave the last a broken mess without limbs, with only his tongue intact, with which he can spill the truth anyways." he demanded, his voice hush with menace.

"The matter of their innocence or guilt is a matter for the courts, and can only be determined with a fair and open trial. NOT a necessity you provided, mind you, with your extrajudicial abductions on sovereign Canis Lupin soil. A few criminals gone free is a small price to be paid for exposing the rot that you bring into our lands, and the police are more than a match for a few dozen malnourished criminals. As to your evil deeds, well, you've said it yourself, some of them were innocent. There was no altruism in your actions, they served only your interests, which are plainly evil." Mog lectured.

Seeing that brawn and bloodshed had not yet earned the chainbreakers their surrender, Mog decided to make an example of them. They had not yet faced pain, only heard from distance the slaughter in the courtyard. It was time to change that.

Resting his club against the ground, he drew a lightning dagger, whipping it from his mouth in a sharp, jerking motion. It was said electricity was the most painful implement of torture, perhaps a little shock therapy would cow the generals into submission.

Mog shrugged, he wasn't sure he had enough pilfered bed linens and hemp rope to tie up all three of the generals anyways. The divines peered on from up high and deep below with judging gazes, as a paladin of vengeance, there was no issue with cruel retribution. Punishment and pain was just as much part of justice as reform and reintegration was. He handed off the makeshift bindings to Ursus, who'd be more capable of arresting the generals with his human-like paws.

"Well?! You heard him! Which one of you deserves to be eaten the most? Which one of you is in charge of the torturers?" The wolf demanded.

Mog came sprinting back around the corner as he overheard their conversation, he sidled back up to the bear and whispered into his ear, "I never realised Kars was a full on psychopath, rather then just yet another power-tripping ape soldier. And the way the general speaks of Kar's master...do you think Kars could've worked for the Incarnation of Hate, the squid master?"

One measly potion for this vast bastion of special forces, and the generals didn't even have any cash or magic items on them. He was about to repeat his demand for the incriminating files, along with the keys to their vault of money and magical items, but the ape had been too obstinate for his patience.

Checking with Ursus to make sure that the remaining generals where properly tied up, he then lead them downstairs and across the plaza towards the Queen. The wolf could only sneer at the sudden bravado "Royalty who do not rule independent realms in their own right, who bent their knees to tyrant, can hardly be called such. And you are not in a position to make such threats, given your deeds and the fact that you stand on lupine soil. Being hunted by the headhunters of the empire is hardly a change from before either. I should think that you ought be more afraid of what Clayton does to you, should you ever return home in failure. Or should we feed you to the croc, like your brother over there?"

Mog chuckled darkly, more as intimidation than any genuine mirth, before roughly shoving the ape down the stairs.

Looking back at the other ape general that Ursus was handling, he asked "I'm curious though, are you actual genuine blood relatives of one of the subordinate monkey kings, or is this more of Clayton's dumb 'the strongest should rule' shit?"

It had been awhile his Mog had trounced around the simian's empire with Kinny, playing resistance fighter, bandit, and liberator all at once. Ahh, the days of yore, full of adventure. He never did get a full picture of how the empire had been reorganized under Clayton, from the perspective of an elite. His nose had been too close to the ground.

He did get an answer from the other general, so silence reigned. Into that gap poured his paranoia. The squids were puppets, so that answer that 'why' easily enough. Nihm was a greater mystery, one that they'd have to get around to solving. Perhaps pursuing the Nihm dealer would yield answers, or perhaps they'd have to go farther afield, away from Canis Lupin to track down more Xenarus facilities in order to get answers. All would come in time.

"You must not have heard the crowds outside then, so I'll make this quick. The apes have been covertly abducting prisoners and operating special forces on our soil. They abducted a couple of our friends, and we caught one of the perpetrators as he tried to cover his tracks. He then led us to a hidden prison, where the prisoners, lizards, wolves, other animals, we're all being tortured, this was underneath the ape embassy. As far as we could tell, they did not have legal representation or due process. Given that this all seems rather illegal, we broke them out. A prison riot ensued, we captured the generals in the aftermath. They've already admitted they were aware of what was going on. We've brought them here to stand trial for their crimes. The crowd of prisoners should be outside, though some have gone home already I'm sure, should be easy enough to contact given that they're passage through the city would be hard to miss." Mog recounted quickly.

It occurred to the paladin that the apes would try to leverage their diplomatic status and the power of the technical knowledge they'd provided to the crown to try and weasel out of their crimes, maybe they'd even try to turn this on the group. Still, Mog wasn't especially worried. He was confident he had the trust of the queen. Not to mention that with Gawain out of the way, there was nothing stopping any number of low level clerics or paladins from forcing a confession from the apes with zone of truth, or command spells. Even more damning for the apes was the crowd of prisoners, there were ample witnesses to the crimes of the apes, and the public would be outraged if action wasn't taken to rectify this.

In other words, this was a fait accompli. Either the apes would stand trial and be found guilty, or the public backlash would force the issue and the apes forced to abandon their interference with the country. No doubt the general's would end up lynched. This was the biggest scandal in what was perhaps decades.

Mog nodded, then said "We'll escort them to their cells, just to be safe. There still might be Mimic soldiers lying around, we didn't get them all. I'll make sure we come straight back afterwards, to debrief."

He had no doubt the queen would be both grateful, yet also fretful. They had moved fast, without seeking the queen's permission as to how to handle this, and a diplomatic incident was inevitable. Ah well, perhaps a verbal lashing was deserved. The prison break had gone well, and justice had been meted out, albeit crudely, but there was an order to things. The wolf resigned himself to the upcoming browbeating, at least he'd gotten what he wanted. The ape influence on Canis Lupin would soon end. With luck, Clayton's influence would further recede as Lincoln retook the helm as the lizard's chief policymaker from Chalsim.

Pushing the general's along towards the police station, he bowed to the queen. "Your Majesty." Then he took his leave with the generals and guards in tow.

If we need to escape, we still have those invisibility potions we bought in Plato. We should decide whether to use them or not soon though. I imagine it depends on whether we think it is worth spending a night or potentially all the time left between now and the summit in prison, instead of chasing after the Nihm dealer. He's the last major plot thread left in Canis Lupin, given that we easily dealt with everyone else by being proactive. He's also the most dangerous, simply because of his Nihm knowledge and possible involvement with Xenarus and Incahat. Even though we've disrupted the prophecy and dealt with Sage and the apes, and even the squids, the Incahat tendrils of influence could be deeper still. We just don't have a good grasp on what their limits are, and I hate to leave them undealt with.

Just as a measure of good faith though, it sort of works. I think you should use your invis potion and escape now and conduct the investigation yourself with the rest of the gang. You're the only one who has actually seen the Nihm dealer and is familiar with him and his scent. You also know how to use the amber rings, and have the knowledge and capabilities of the rest of the group. I could benefit from a rest, my spells are depleted, and I'm tired. Here, take one of my invisibility potions, so that you have two. That way you can escape and have one left over for stealth. Kinny also has one. I'll be fine in my cell, don't worry about me." Mog whispered back, surreptitiously passing over the potion in question over to the bear.

No worries, our schedule has been slipping recently, as can be seen in this thread's post count. An easy mistake. At least we got to resume this week. Anyways, have a good week you guys! See you next week, hopefully. I won't be available the week after that though. So, after the 3rd, I won't see you guys for another couple of weeks.
