Air resistance will slow down your motion super-exponentially toward zero in all directions except in the direction of gravity where you'll gradually reach terminal velocity. In realistic time spans you'll still be going fast but not nearly at the same speed as the plane. It becomes an optimization problem between how long you can be in the air and how much you can be slowed down before your acceleration by gravity contributes more velocity than the deceleration due to lateral air resistance. Also if you manage to land on a slope at roughly the same angle as your incoming trajectory with relatively soft terrain you can end up in a tumble/slide at reduced speed and survivable deceleration on impact. It's insanely lucky and all the conditions have to be right but I can imagine a specific scenario which allows you to walk away from something like this pretty reliably.

Indians culturally have a 'do the needful' mentality ingrained into them, which in most workplaces translates to just working as fast as possible to look good, and not thinking about anything or paying attention to detail. If you have ever worked with Indians you will know this to be true, they intentionally go out of their way to work their ass off to look like amazing workers, but also make a bunch of mistakes because they are speeding through everything without much care. Quantity over quality manifest. In this instance I suspect someone may have raised a concern about this and they just fobbed it off and got the flight out on time because at the end of the day that's what looks good in their numbers. In most workplaces this is harmless other than an effect on quality, but I suppose in aviation it could be quite dangerous
