The original is already a very nice compromise. 50 Shades of Gray had enormous success, so much so that you could be forgiven to think it's the main representative of the genre at a glance. 50 Shades is to women romance what Evangelion is to Mecha, it's a genre staple, for better and definitely for the worse too.
There is nothing wholesome about harems, if the trope is used in it's intended way. Most of the time the harems are only nominally harems and serve as a convenient way of showcasing as many fetishes as the author can reasonably cram in the series. There are no "best girls" in true harems as it's depicted in the original version.
