The less privilege you have, the more acutely you are aware of societal problems. For a privileged white suburbanite in a European country, crime is just a number on a graph, and his biggest worries are some rich person making too much money relative to him, or being able to get his health treated for low or no cost. For people in poor countries, cities, neighborhoods, etc, crime, horrific violence, rape, molestation, and war tend to be far more pressing concerns than whether you are making a fair amount of money or have the right to dye your hair green or red, or whether the leader of your nation is going to sign a trade deal that won't affect you.
