have you ever quit a hobby because you were embarrassed about how bad you are after so long? I just realized ive been playing online chess for 15 years and am only 1200 rating. At this point I just look like a fucking retard. I want to kill myself over this.

Theres a difference between not being professional and not being bad. This chess rating is like bottom 70th percentile (lichess ratings are inflated), 1200 rating is accomplishable by someone who just learned chess, within a single month. By comparison. I am 1900 rating in street fighter 6. The amount of time ive put into the game is reflected by my rating. Am I pro? Not even fucking close. Can I beat over 70% of the total playerbase? Yes. This chess situation just makes me feel like a sped.

If you were drawing for 15 years and your drawing ability was worse than the average 15 year old, you should probably quit drawing.

Fighting games give you immediate feedback when you fuck up. This allows you to learn and improve just by playing. Chess blunders at 1200+ are the type that don't materialize until a couple turns later. You lose the instant feedback mechanism and can no longer grow through play alone.

Chess is about study, not about gameplay. You improve by grinding puzzles or using an engine to provide feedback. I quit chess at age 12 and 1300 USCF rating for this exact reason. It's just not fun.

because you are just mindlessly playing without studying or trying to improve. u cant just keep doing the same thing over and over for 15 years and expecting urself to magically get better when u arent even paying attention to the mistakes u are making in order to improve

Could just be an IQ issue as chess is a check for specific kinds of intelligence. You should try hobbies most people are in a position to get better at like running or something.

Not quite. I still do the hobby (photography), but I completely gave up on posting my work on IG after four years and 2K photos because nobody fucking cared. As it is, the only time I go outside 'for leisure' is to the park; so I've gotten in the habit of taking weekly photos of the view from the bench I drink my coffee on, the deer enclosure, and the swans and ducks at the lakes. I posted some photos to the park's FB group, but very rarely. I don't have 'a real camera'.

dude i'm in the same boat. i'm picking up chess again after ~7 years of not playing and i'm hard stuck at 1000 rating on rapid on chess.com

do you play every day? i've been studying each of my games in the post-game engine review, but it's so hard to translate that to real moves in real games. every time i read about some chess prodigy becoming a grandmaster at age 15 or something i instantly think of suicide and how worthless my whole life is

Was art for me but I had reasons for that feeling. Art is still a struggle for me but I have managed to get myself back into it.

I have a disability that makes fine muscle coordination extremely difficult. So I am absolutely ass at FPS but I still enjoy playing them. I think I enjoy them actually because I'm bad at them and it feels challenging. If I was good, it wouldn't be hard and get boring way faster. That's how I cope anyway

Very much
I kinda quit Chinese because I studied it for around 10 years and I can still barely get by. I'm also awful at film even though I majored in it in college. Fuck I am useless.
