Fiction numbs you in general. You don't feel emotions as strong, either good ones or bad ones, as you would if you were not constantly exposed to this kind of emotional stimuli.

This is why young kids feel emotions more strongly than adults, since they haven't been fiction-saturated for nearly as long.

anon. no one wakes up thinking, "today I'm going to rape and kill people." instead, whenever someone commits a horrific act, they construct a narrative/story in which their actions were necessary, justified and virtuous because the alternative is a mental tension so crushing it would shatter their ability to function and live.
