I think the classic advice for the smallest amount on hand for people with high risk tolerance is six months of spending. More conservative would be one year. I mean it hardly qualifies as an emergency if just a thousand dollars fixes all your problems. I'm very comfortable with risk so I don't keep much in dollars. I'm mostly in crapto and etf's. I only need to stay solvent for 10 days or so, as I can sell assets and have the funds deposited to my checking account within ten days. My house, car, and body have insurance so it would have to be a strange thing that could leave me in a bind. Despite my comfort with risk I am very aware that it exists. Emergencies are less scary if you prepare for them. Food is probably more important. I remember the plandemic and how the government attacked our logistics. Barely any food in the grocery stores, not even flour. Ramen and chef boyardee keeps forever so why not maintain a food hoard sufficient to get through a few months without resupply?

Experts are terrible at predicting how to do things that haven't been done, and homelessness hasn't been solved. Experts are only good at dealing with situations that have been dealt with before. That is why they are experts: they have education and/or experience that gives them knowledge about "how things should be," but not necessarily insight into future trends.
