Has there always been this much global conflict in the world or is it just social media making it seem like it's a lot worse recently.

They may not have been global conflicts, but I thought there used to be a lot more conflicts in the world.

social media isnt "making" it seem worse, it's just always been this bad(actually it's extremely peaceful right now when you take a look at the rest of history)and you get to actually see whats going on in real time

No
After the fall of the Soviet Union people thought it would be an era of world peace. There were conflicts in the Balkans (and there still are) but all the major powers were at peace. China seemed like it was westernizing and had a stated policy of cooperation so there were no major enemies. The biggest fear in America was Japanese cars and cameras.
9/11 really changed the world but even during the 00s it wasn't war like we worry about today, which is closer to the 80s or maybe worse than that.
In the US racism was over and everything was looking up. People thought that the gravy train would last forever (and it probably could have managed differently).
It can't be understated how different Xingping's China is compared to the 90s: it's a total policy reversal.
