not really. A small amount of money (1% or so) is involuntarily taken from my military injury pay and put into a government retirement account. I should be doing more but I don't care to

What retirement? I'm on NEETbux and hoping for UBI before I die in what is hopefully the next 20 years.
In any case, fiat money is a scam and it's devalued all the time. Yes, muh investing, but I have nothing to invest with, other than three gold coins I bought which barely appreciate in value, even if it does beat the scam called inflation.

The gold won't appreciate unless your currency falls, but they will always have their value as money.
Assuming you can find a buyer you want something from, of course. Gold is wealth but you can't eat it if the system collapses.
