well working class people did work from a young age, this was well known. Men started working outside the home at age 11 though women would stay around and do house chores until they were married off, unless they were extremely destitute poor in which they also worked.

My own father managed to marry a virgin in the 90s (he ruined it, but that doesn't change the fact he got it).

It's just in the last 2 decades that women decided to drop the ball and become the worse version of themselves.
