I miss low fantasy, everything now is grimdark or just super gay. I just want a medieval setting with some basic magic elements, no grand cosmology and lovecraftian BS or eastern philosophy. Knights and wizards, the fuckin basics

Why did Tolkien mindrape fantasy as a genre so hard. It's impossible to escape the basic structure of the races he uses and how they function, look, and interact.

I don't really blame him, I'm more wondering why so many after him were so comfortable saying "fuck it, I'll just tweak Tolkiens shit a little, then put all the effort into character and story." Isn't the fun of fantasy that you can completely make it all up from scratch?
