I read these books over my vacation, but I'm concerned I didn't understand them that well, so I thought I'd discuss them with you guys.

you can't understand a philosophy text fully without a deep knowledge of the history (and language) of the culture that produced it. so do not feel bad.

Don't waste your time here. Talk to Grok, ChatGPT, Kimi or whatever.

Hey buddy, I think you got the wrong door, /lit/ is two blocks down
Anonymous No.81936736 [Report]
Most of all the classical philosophers and modern philosophy in general is a bunch of nonsense if you ask me. Most of the time it's just self help for people who want to come across as intellectuals, the other half of the time its just intellectual masturbation and metaphysical spiritual mumbo jumbo.

It's hard to explain, it's really just a vague sense that I missed out on a lot of what the authors had to say. I am not confident I could repeat the text in my own words.

In that case re-read it. Think about what part of the text means, and then ask for help if you don't get it.

Most of the "classics" are like this from being endlessly overhyped by pseuds who have only read five books in their entire life

I disagree, I think there was clearly a lot to learn from these texts, but some of it was too difficult for me.

You're a whore and I don't care to discuss anything with you.

I feel like there has been over a million words written about those books already
Anonymous No.81937125 [Report]
only read Spake Z once, The republic was classwork and knowing it was classwork made me never touch it again, now the whole phase of pseud has passed all the hope gone and there is only the bible that I read when I have to. Been reading some warren buffet easy reading of quotes, makes me feel bad though since I'm a loser and the no hope. I hate lit and myself, enjoy it while you can. I am a retard.

I've gone and checked secondary sources to see if I was missing anything enough times at this point to be confident in my initial assessment of a text.

As with every other medium, popularity is not a reliable indicator of quality

Why do you think these books become popular?

It's a stage play where Nietzsche and Plato debate each other using the major points from their works.
>Plato talks about world of forms
>Nietzsche calls Plato delusional and talks about slave morality and the Superman
>Plato calls Nietzsche a lousy cynical critic
