I really don't see how you can look at the two parties and not see a difference. Democrats want to expand social welfare programs, Republicans want to slash them. Democrats want to raise taxes (especially on the rich), Republicans want to slash them (especially for the rich). Democrats are usually more for free trade (less so lately), strong institutions, immigration, LGBT rights, secularism, foreign aid, consumer protections, environmental protections, proceduralism; Republicans lately have been against those things. Votes on bills are usually not bipartisan, especially lately. There is overlap (less lately) between the parties e.g., the most left Republican voter and the most right Democrat voter are similar, but you should expect this when there are only two parties and they essentially have to compete to attract the middle in order to win elections. Polarization is much higher today than 20 years ago, so there's less overlap now than then.
