The reason behind this is that Putin is afraid of military coups, so rather than have a strong and intelligent military that could be capable of such a thing, they are poor and treated like poor shit on purpose, so they have such a bad reputation in Russia. Generals that get too popular or successful get snipped by the glowies. Prigozhin was a bad mistake because he was outside the military structure but needed to secure Bakhmut because the real military was too poor and stupid, then Putin tried to assassinate him preemptively because Prigozhin was getting too big for his boots so Prigozhin freaked out.
