the Democrats are using this as ammo as this is fundamentally unraveling his base. Formerly, a lot of Democrats were treating this as a far-right conspiracy theory not worth considering (when Biden and co was in power). Now that the shoe is on the other foot, they are trying to highlight the issue. this has led to many left media outlets pushing the issue. this shouldn't be a left-right issue though. it's more about a people vs elites.
it unravels the trump base as it ruins Trump as an outsider in the ring of the political elite. It shows he may have been complicit. he was getting away fine with claiming that he knew of the island but never partook in it. it's similar to many actors/actresses that knew of weinstein's antics but couldn't do much about it. his refusal to release the files makes him look more complicit than we think. If he refuses to release it because Epstein was a Mossad - israeli intelligence - plant, and this was their blackmailing operation - then they should just say as much. The public opinion of Israel right now is nearing a low though, so that might be his apprehension. He's handled it in the worst way possible - if the plan was to keep the attention off himself. I wouldn't be surprised if insiders in the government worked to rope Trump into the files somehow as a hoax, but I also wouldn't be surprised he is complicit.
it's eroding the sense of his outsider nature though. Every time Trump has been in power, the media focus has been on him for years. This appears to be the new Russian collusion angle. While that was likely hot air, this is overshadowing a known gross plot in the realm of the elite.
