If you spend some time with children, it is natural to feel some kind of affection for them, even if they aren't your own.

I wonder how many fairy tales begin, "Once upon a time, there was an old man and an old woman, and they were sad because they had no children." Then one crash lands on an asteroid, or from a space ship, or a giant peach, and then the couple is happy, and the love that they give the child guides them to become a hero.
Is that just a story?

The Little Prince is from an asteroid unrelatedly, Superman is from space, Princess Kaguya came from a stalk of bamboo in The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter and went home to the moon, and Momotaro was found in a peach floating in the river. Also Abraham and Sarah get a special mention but they don't find a child, they find God and get pregnant while old
