>how long does it take
Depends on their age and experience. From birth, you can start as soon as their mother will let you touch them, which can be pretty quick if the mother trusts you, sometimes they'll even introduce their foal to you, it's cute. You shouldn't start anything beyond desensitization for a while, and shouldn't start riding them until they've at least mostly grown (around 3-4 years). If you have an older horse that isn't really trained at all, it depends on their disposition, intelligence, and experience with humans. A traumatized horse is going to take longer, a horse that knows absolutely nothing will take a while. The trainer I study under, who is one of the best in the area, can turn basically any horse around in 90 days, so I would say that's the average for a really good trainer, but a full year is more likely for someone less experienced and isn't constantly creating bad habits.

Yes I own him. His previous owners gave him to me because we got along very well, and they wanted him to be with someone they knew would care for him. He's 19, I started working with him when he was about 16, and he hadn't worked for 5 years prior to that so he was very out of shape.
>if I quit
I know enough people to take him and his friend somewhere else. My boss doesn't want his friend, so she's basically "mine" but I'd probably have to fork over like $200 which is annoying. I'd train her if I had more time, but she's older and fatter at like 26, and has literally no training other than following on a trail ride for 15 years.

We do our best, but it's one of those things we don't discuss really. I know one girl who mentions molestation weirdly often.
