How many people here use Linux as their primary OS?

I have been using it since 1997, I think. My first install was Slackware 3.4. I remember that I spent days downloading the installation files over a dialup internet connection and putting them on floppy disks

I would love to switch to it, but many of my old pirated vidya simply don't launch on Proton. I also can't properly organize my extensive porn collection because media management tools (DigiKam) and video editors (Kdenlive, Resolve) on Linux are simply, well...shit. And I've tried more than those I've mentioned.
Basically I'm stuck on Windows because software on Linux just can't achieve what software on Windows can. At least pirating Windows 10 IoT Enteprirse LTSC is very easy and that edition of Windows is actually nice and lightweight.
On the brightside, I installed Bazzite on my gaming PC to play the few games I've bought on Steam. And those all run extremely well and I like how easy the Steam Deck interface is. For playing new-ish games, I definitely prefer Bazzite to Windows.

I've been considering switching to Linux because of how quickly the state of internet privacy is deteriorating, but I'm lazy and kind of retarded so I've been putting it off.

I was born ten years after he started using Linux. I wish I was a millennial or Gen X so badly

i use linux because it's the only sane platform for development. trying to port a project of mine to windows was such an inexcusable shitshow that i can't bring myself to ever use it again. windows is held together with scotch tape and insane eulas.

Weird thing to say because that's how almost every Linux distro feels to me. I'm not a dev but from a power user perspective, Windows is much more friendly and feels like a much more polished product, despite MS's recent efforts to enshittify it with 11. I've used various Linux distros for maybe 2 weeks combined. All of them had ridiculous UI inconsistency issues along with software dependancy annoyances. I consider the vast majority of Linux distros to be geek hobby projects and very far from being finished products. It would be great if we had like 10 distros with every dev's attention focused on those instead of like 700 hobby projects in various states of brokenness.

Same could be said for macOS, the only area where i'm not so sure about is C/C++ development

from a power user perspective linux is completely different from windows in that you're not even using the same software as casual users. in linux you pretty much script everything yourself using command line tools which are far more capable than their windows counterparts. if you're hoping to use a gui then you're out of luck, unfortunately. linux gui is an afterthought that usually just serves as a frontend for a small collection of prefab shell scripts.

mac is just another unix clone like linux which actually takes a lot of its core operating system directly from linux. i don't hate it but i don't see the point in using a software distro curated by someone else when i can curate my own.

bds and not linux

I can set up my editor, terminal, browser, langauges the way i like it. I don't see a reason why i should rice my desktop environment just to make it more *aesthetic* while NetworkManager shit itself again in the background

I was using it off and on with ubuntu and linux mint for the better part of a decade but a few months ago I took the plunge and moved to arch + kde, not even dual booting Windows. It has been really good

Seems like a big hassle unless your an /x/ schizo or Reddit bugman hobbyist
Just use windows and turn off telemetry

I switched to Mint around 4 years ago intending for it to be an easy transition from Windows while I got to grips with learning Linux but I've never felt the need to change distro since. It just werks.

i did for years, started on ubuntu in 2013 and finally uninstalled it from my main desktop 2024 though i had stopped using that partition in 2023. too many softwares i use daily have no linux equivalent thats worth a damn so by the end i was spending 80% of my day on winblows anyways.

Can I develop games in Unreal and Unity on linux? Can I play them on Linux? Or do I have to emulate windows in some way and kill performance and run into issues and bugs unrelated to game development just because I question my sexuality by trying out different operating systems?

Yeah, the first one I could actually get working was Mandrake, which became Mandriva, then I moved to Ubuntu, then Mint.

I run arch on my ancient laptop. Has actually worked great as a machine to tinker with and stream plex to in bed. Plex hosted on an unraid box which itself is just a proprietary slackware fork for home server stuff.
I want to switch fully at some point. Main PC runs windows 11 for games but proton is making it really tempting. Tried some low spec games on the arch laptop and proton really does make it tempting. Most things just work and I've been trying to cut ms/google out of my life.

I did, it was the most comfy and usable system, but basically greed and depravity made me switch to other proprietary operating systems and I feel ten times shittier for doing that. I wish I could escape it someday.
