The government would probably prevent that from happening. The only way I could see it happening is if it's decentralized peer to peer or something, or if it's through something like Starlink instead of the underwater broadband lines we have now. Regardless, it's a massive investment for not much return for a company to do.

We've already got those, and they're KaiOS pieces of shit. Japs and Worst Koreans still make 'em alright, but they're more smartphones in flip-phone form factor. Pain in the ass to use one outside of Japan from what I've heard--especially in the states for some reason. Something about restrictions put in place by phone carriers, but I don't know what exactly.
