I can point to the exact events and situations that really cratered my life.
1: coming into contact with one particular bully
2: the only available friends I had as a child being people who didn't particularly treat me well when all was said and done
3: not having any brothers, and having a largely unavailable father
4: having an overly protective and delusional mother
5: many of my teachers being vindictive uncaring assholes, who made me disengage from work
6: simply not having any opportunities to meet women for large stretches of my life
7: probable agoraphobia that went undiagnosed because people just thought I was lazy

How could I have fixed any of that with "effort"?

If you grind, then when you get a lucky break you have the mindset to seize the opportunity, and the skills to make it work. If you have shit mindset, and don't put any work in, you will not even recognise opportunities, and you wont have the skills to utilize them either.

Effort matters for some things but not others. There are many things that can be achieved only through effort (for example, physical strength by adhering to an exercise routine with a reasonable diet), but many more things that can only be achieved through luck.

I've faced extremely strenuous circumstances growing up and as a young adult, and despite it all I've persevered simply due to certain dispositions of which I've had no control over (I am autistic and from a young age I sought to understand everything via philosophical frameworks, which culminated in a passion for philosophy that ultimately made me adjust my life in the most optimal way, allowing for healing to take place over time; if I was a normie, I likely wouldn't have arrived at where I am today without significant help, help that I wasn't sufficiently provided, meaning if I wasn't as resilient and internally fixated as I am, I wouldn't have made it).
