From 7am to 4:50pm every weekday, my life is taken up by work and work-related activities. From 4:50pm to 9:20pm, I have around 4h to spend on myself. I'm not going to waste them reading a book when I can watch a movie, play vidya, exercise and mess about with computers. I already have too little time for the activities I enjoy doing.
I read a lot of car/computer magazines as a kid. I'm absolutely not illiterate and I speak two languages fluently. I don't need to read fiction slop to be cultured and there's nothing about books that is intellectually superior to watching a good movie or documentary. It's like saying listening to music on vinyl disks is a superior way of consuming music compared to playing digital files on a phone/computer.
