AGI bros, it's fucking over.
GPT-5 is fucking DOGSHIT.
Ever since like 2010 I have been coping that muh superintelligent AI will fix everything and after 2021 it started to get really exciting with AI advancing at a ridiculous pace.
But now it seems that 100x the model size and investing the GDP of a small country makes a barely 5% better model.
It's over, no AGI by 2030, probably not even 2050. We will be fucking dead when it comes. Time to get back in the wage cage.

If AGI is actually possible and not just a sci-fi pipe dream you better hope they don't develop it. It's not going to be used to help you.

Diagnosed schizo here. Many years ago i had a psychotic episode where i got obsessed over AI and i had a bunch of visions about it, one of them was that AI will never be perfect because its created by humans and it mimics human thinking. So it only can be an even more corrupted and imperfect version of humans, no matter how much effort you put into it. Also, the new models are shit because the AI companies ran out of new content to train the AIs with. Add that to the dead internet problem and there you have it, electronic parrots that just spew outdated nonsense

I like GPT 5 :)
i'm not a coder but what i've gotten out of using it is that it has way more natural language now, less of the annoying fake friendly vibe. which does make it feel a lot smarter. it's just a tone thing i know it doesn't perform much better

Of course GPT-5 is underwhelming; the entire technology behind LLMs has existed for literal decades. It's just a more complex version of the same text prediction models a Nokia brick phone from the late 90's used.

The idiots who control this sector believe "AGI" is just "An AI that can generate 1 trillion dollars in profit".

Don't believe me? Look it up yourself. There was never any higher goal than making money, and periodically releasing a "new" version of your product is a tried-and-true marketing strategy. Maxing out what an existing technology can do is still impressive... But it won't change the world. This is why a Ford Model T is undeniably very distinct from a top-of-the-line 2025 Ferrari, but not categorically different.

Contractual obligations are not the same thing as the the controllers' vision. They had to define AGI in a way that would fit in a contract, that's all. I agree it's all underwhelming and stupid and not the path to AGI, but you're focusing on the wrong thing.

Come on, man. You're reaching, and engaging in wishful thinking. The economic reality is the only thing that matters. You know these people don't give a fuck about achieving any kind of higher mode of living for humanity; they're already at the top of the pyramid.

No I think we're talking past each other, I largely agree with you here. I don't the OpenAI guy thinks AGI is an AI that can generate 1 trillion in profit. I think he has a more reasonable definition, but the more reasonable definition is less precise and won't be able to be placed into a legal contract so they went with the 1 trillion in profit which is more aligned with the business interest anyway. I don't think he cares about us or humanity, I don't think he's a good person. I just think you're wrong about him or the other AI techbros seeing AGI as defined as an AI that makes a lot of money.

Fair enough, if pedantic... I still disagree. There definitely have to be some true believers in the corporate AI superstructure, but I'd bet the percentage is depressingly low.

Regardless, you know that wasn't my only point on the topic, so don't pretend it was. The technology still existed before they "innovated" it, and there is ample evidence that they have the same actively hostile, anti-human goals that all others in their class do. Don't forget that some OpenAI employees have been given military ranks and are now officially inducted into the military industrial complex, breaking their previous promise (which only idiots believed) to stay out of such things, and they have definitely not been following the AI safety guidances of the likes of Bostrom - doing that would hurt profit potential.

Much like Uber/Lift, Crypto, NFTs, etc, it's just a way of leveraging/modifying existing technologies to shuffle capital around to achieve a new form of grifting.

Not all the LLM tech existed in the past. Attention was relatively novel as were transformers. The RL techniques to create CoT were also somewhat new even if not exactly novel. There's quite a lot of innovation going on with LLMs though, it's not purely hardware scaling. I don't think it's going to lead to AGI and I think the whole thing is at a dead end at the moment. AGI will probably come out of the neuromorphic stuff a few decades down the line if I had to guess.
Crypto and NFTs are retarded, yes. I'd pushback on Uber/Lyft though, they are strictly superior to taxis. They work better, there's less scamming, and they're cheaper. Taxis were a horrific monopolistic industry where people would sit on their stupid medallions and rent them out for exorbitant fees. Uber et al are providing a real service even if it's not innovative; it's not a grift. The death of the traditional taxi industry is something we should all celebrate, fuck those people.

Their energy need emits as much co2 as the entire air travel industry. They currently make up like 2-3% of the worldwide energy supply.

Yeah, because they've run out of data needed to train standardized ANI (LLM) models; so, they've resorted to synthetic data. Which is retarded and the reason why ANI will only get shittier until AGI comes around

Blockchain was supposed to change the world. 15 years later economic power has only continued to further consolidate and the average man's well-being further diminishes. Bitcoin and Ethereum's revolutionary potential is way higher than agi could be. Yet we don't even have proper nft's in use. Instead of a trustless society we are hurtling towards a distrust society and surveillance state.
