in most states it is the de-facto law. In most if you sign the birth certificate then you are the father in the eyes of the law full stop no matter what the DNA test later says. In others you have a set amount of time to contest paternity and if you don't file a suit within that time you are on the hook until the child is 18, no exceptions and if you stop paying child support you can and will be arrested and thrown into prison by some white knight cuckold of a judge.

I live in a state where if a married woman is pregnant, the husband is assumed to be the father.
it does not matter if they are separated, only until they are legally divorced, the husband is assumed to be the babbydaddy until proven otherwise with a DNA test. The only way to prevent that situation is full divorce before and to get the DNA test to prove otherwise.

If the governent really wanted to profit they could just put all deadbeats in hard labor in a mine or digging for oil and they can't go home until their ex's kid is out of college.
