People didn't used to come and go out of our lives so much except for at death. Leaving for a job or school etc is an aspect of modernity. None of our brain's systems, all of which are biological, evolved to deal with modernity.

We are evolved to live in tribes that only see each other go in death. "Missing someone" who you won't see again is literally the grief of death.
