Silent protagonists are an absolute cancer and those that like them are socially inept and probably permavirgins. Obviously titles without any real conversations like Kirby or whatever are fine but these dialogs are beyond gnarly and anyone who can just shit through this without cringing is a socially inept permavirgin.

>But but YOU are Gordon, just imagine your own lines

Doesn't matter because no one is responding to your lines so the dialog is still extremely unnatural. Either the main character does not ever respond and people somehow continue to talk to him finding that normal, or in reverse no one responds to the main character. But I gather that that's how the "conversations" these permavirgins that enjoy this have anyway.

You'll just end up with incredibly unnatural lines and an extremely uninteresting and bland protagonist to allow lonely losers with no social skills some escapist self-insert fantasy.

I barely even remember the story to the half life series, I thought the whole appeal was the gameplay really.

I wouldn't even know. The only game I still really play is StarCraft II, mostly multiplayer, and there they changed it from a silent perspective character in the StarCraft I to making the player an unseen "director" that doesn't actually play a fixed character but just controlls units which was a massive improvement.

I think Halo still does it.

I remember much of it, also the gameplay wasn't great. The gunplay was mediocre and it was mostly famous because of its focus on story and that the entire thing was one big first person experience without loading screens or levels which would be cool if he actually talked.

>Heyyy Gordon, thanks for taking time out of your busy day to talk, listen, we have a little situation up here, lots of bad hombres turning Black Mesa inside out right now, I mean like walls collapsing and people dying, real apocalypse stuff, bad vibes man, so listen it turns out your little stunt earlier opened a portal to some kinda alien world, another planet, can you believe that, it's called Xen apparently, not exactly my style, a little too short if you ask me, I was always more of a Predator guy, remember those movies, man the thermal vision was so good, are they still making those, anyway gotta check-it-outo later-ino but for now, Gordon my man, my main man right now actually, on account of everyone else being, you know, dead and all, real bummer, so yeah if you could basically kill their boss guy to close the portal and end the invasion that would be super great, like really, I need this right now Gordon, let's just say the shareholders and divorce courts have not been kind to me recently, and this whole alien invasion thing is really cramping my style, but yeah what I need youuu to do is basically put a lid on all that, catch you later, assuming you didn't die or anything

What?
Anonymous No.82160945 >>82161091
the reason why you're taking issue with the silent protagonist concept is that how it was inplemented in half life 2 fucking SUCKS.
play half lfie 1 and see what i mean.
Half life 2 shouldn't even be actually played it's just a beta for the source engine. They just reused what they had in half life 1 because it was there. Half life 2 should have had a voiced protagonist but its impossible with the franchise with what they've prehistablished with the "always remain in first person".
So yeah half life 2 fuckng sucks
Anonymous No.82160995
Lol the story is so fucking retarded already. You think silent protagonist is what breaks it, but the zombies and spaceships dont bother you at all. They cant even make a real story because realism is extreme poverty and hard work. Simply by having a mind at all, you are working so fucking hard every second. Theres no end to the labor.

Is this scratched dialogue for the G-man?

No, I think it's bad in every case I've seen it pretty much.
People talking to a character who doesn't talk back is just silly, even in StarCraft I where they rarely talk to the player character it still feels silly.

Depends on the game. If you're not trying to tell a deep story, I think it's fine. Doomguy doesn't need to talk to people. HL fucked up, though. The first one it felt okay, because that was the norm at the time, but HL2 they went big on world building and having no player voice or any real way to interact with people (other than blasting them with the gravity gun) was detrimental to that. Side note, tried playing HL2 again the last few weeks and it's dogshit. I don't know why I thought it was so good at the time.

Its supposed to be so you can impersonate yourself in the character. I don't think it's bad but if you don't like it then you can't play most older games lol

>>82161102
I think half life 1 still does hold up really really well, because there's a sense to it being like that, there was thought behind it. Half life 2's Gordon doesn't have a voice because that's how it was in half life 1 and that's where they fucked up. They went with a totally different concept, instead of just surviving now you lead a fucking revolt against aliens, with a silent protagonist?
Im convinced that for everyone who says half life 2 is a must play for shooters hasn't played the game since the 2000s.
Anonymous No.82161179
It's because they're too lazy to make a likable character so they just make them a mute and have you project it's lazy writing.

Yeah I know that's the reason but it just leads to absolutely shit dialog.

>>82161102
Yeah like I said it's fine with characters like Kirby and Doomguy because no one talks to them anyway and they're just shooting and platforming.

Not every game needs a plot and dialog, but dialog definitely needs interaction between multiple characters. The difference between Crysis 2 and 3 was really big in this regard with how much more interesting of a character Prophet was. He had so much history and personality going for him.

Sounds like you have a lack of self and want others to say your words for you. Silent protagonists provide embodiment.
