I feel like Rei is my alter identity now. I feel completely alienated from everyone, unable to connect. I'm not adept at living and just go to work and then to bed. She is literally me (not in a tranny or sexual way).

What is Rei's story and is she an android?

She was never socialized as she was made with one purpose. So she is supposed to be the analog for autistic people as its clear she is withdrawn and isolated.

Rei has dissociative personality disorder due to being reborn several times each time she was killed, into a clone body.

She's the remnant of Ikari Gendo's former wife, Ikari Yui who died during the first contact experiment where her soul merged with unit-01.

She was actually exposed and tortured many times, forcing her to develop the emotional blunting necessary to survive. She was beaten to death for emotional outbursts in the past, each time being reborn into a fresh clone body with her memories broken and shuffled. This eventually leads her to develop the personality she's introduced with, which is after dozens of deaths and rebirths along with scattering of memories. Rei therefore can't tell what's real or not, and so assumes everything is not. Her behaviors are somewhat like PTSD due to long-term cPTSD in combination with memory loss. Her memory is backed up on a regular basis but one of her clones can't fully take on the same state she was in before she died. So therefore her memories become scattered and she isn't able to differentiate between what's real or not.

Remember, you're noting but a doll pretending to be a human.

Officially speaking there are three, but failures aren't accounted for. The optimistic view is that there were three successes, but the number of failures isn't known. Since it's a fantasy series we can either view it as similar to a star-trek transporter which instantly disintegrates you and only keeps your clone alive, but, that doesn't seem very realistic.

A better version of the story is that Rei is actually Gendo's sin. Since it's wrong to attempt to create life from nothing, and Rei's personality fills that partly too. Not only is Rei not truly alive, but, she also can not die. Even if only three versions of her actually existed, she went insane all three times we know of. That's a 100% failure rate.
