you have found difficulty, strife, discomfort in real life and no longer look to fulfill that need with media. instead, you look to media for what you currently lack: positivity, friendship, cuteness, etc.
there is a lot of truth to the idea that sweats, comp players, etc are lifeless. there's a curve to character/account level where a certain amount is good, but anything past it starts to get into nolife territory unless the game is *very* old. people pulling ridiculously high level, sweating their nuts off at a game, are using it to fill the hole where a job and family obligations would normally go.
i see this in my friend group: game skill is (generally) inversely proportionate to how well they function in real life. yeah, some of them break this by being lifeless and shit or very busy and good, but the rule still stands - the more someone has going on, the worse they tend to be at games, to a certain level somewhere below average.
so yeah, basically, kids have no lives because they're kids so they lean into the cool macho shit. later on, things change, they find out that life isn't actually that fun - dark media and image just don't fit as well. then they switch to lighter themes to fill the gap.
