The Pokedex is pre-programmed to recognize and give a description of an observed species that the regional professor already knows. By hiding the pre-programmed information the professor can check how much of the region is explored by the trainer.

What's puzzling is how the regional professor plans to learn about possible unknown behaviors and characteristics of already known species. For example: what is the mating behavior of male and female Onyx? It's unclear whether the trainer can add such observation to the Pokedex.
