Without instinct you would have rejected your family and died alone. You are running on one billion year old deeply-flawed software that forces you to take action by releasing hyper-specialized chemicals to encourage you to do things that "feel good". Anything else is illusion or abstraction.

Most people can't even comprehend the degree to which their consciousness instinct is automated. By the time you are aware of anything, your brain already made every process required for that brain state, you are living on an 500ms delay, this applies even to an electric shock directly delivered to the brain. Consciousness isn't even one thing, it's just a combination of all of your sensory input, the processing of it and your instincts, there isn't one "main" consciousness, if you lose functions, the set that operates your complex consciousness instinct just becomes less, which is why Alzheimer patients still retain varying degrees of awareness despite losing function of several brain modules.

I believe we control only a part of our bodies. If I was my brain, I could simply turn off my emotions, pain, control my organs. And yet I cannot, our brain is a calculator, a computer, it works in the background influencing us in ways that most don't realize. All the feelings & choices come from your brain calculating what is most beneficial to us, though it works on an old operation system of the hunter gatherer days.

Do you do things you enjoy? Why? Because your brain told you that it was beneficial & now is telling you to do it. Everything we do is influenced by our brain, the only way to say that you do not act on instinct, is to do absolutely nothing ever.

When someone decides to against what they enjoy, it is because their brain has made the calculations & finds it worthwhile for a reason or another.

You're "emergent" in that you're the sum of the complex actions of the brain, both the neuro-impulses and bio-chemical stimulation that work in immensely complex ways on a micro-cellular level. The black box part gets chiseled away with every new breakthrough in neuroscience.
