People didn't stop visiting or paying enough to make these aesthetic choices unprofitable. Of course everyone wants playgrounds and slides and toy and shit, but at what cost? This move being profitable to McDonald's is a direct proof that price isn't that high.
McDonald's (or their franchisees if you want get into the legalese) spends less money on maintenance, decoration, repair, cleaning. Customers still go to McDonald's and buy their food. There is more money in the economy going to more useful things that better reflect the values of people. I see this as the efficient market in action. If you want to be entertained go to a place that deals with entertainment. This is what Americans have collectively said with their pockets. And they do just that.
What is the issue? Do you want state subsidized McDonald's facades? Collectivized fast food to waste taxpayers' money?
