when I say "rejecting their identity", I don't mean just being different from the stereotypical presentation of that identity, I mean openly treating their group as *inferior* to the dominant group. there's a difference between being a gay dude who isn't obviously queer to an outside observer - there is a problem if that guy looks down on gay men who are more obviously queer, and thinks they should just act "normal", ie like straight men stereotypically do.
it's not only accepting the narrative of one group being inferior to another, but trying to cross over to the side of the dominant group by discriminating against your own group. and acting as if you aren't a part of it.

I feel where a lot of people get confused on this point is the difference between objective qualities and subjective enjoyment. you can say a Shakespearian sonnet is more complex than a modern videogame storyline, you can say it has been more influential, you can say it was harder to write, but does that make it objectively better from the side of enjoyment?
