what if Kierkegaard got really popular in 2016 instead of Hegel? where would we be?

Moot point because the premise is shit. No normie reads philosophy at all. The only way they interact with it is out of context quotes used in motivational images.
There is a reason normies and people who don't belong here are inauthentic and everything they say has to be tinged with irony, or a massive joke. Modern normie beliefs are worshipping the self, and avoiding being vulnerable or uncomfortable.

you can't deny Hegel wasn't a /lit/ meme from 2016-whenever he was irrelevant

it would have made no difference. The united states is inevitably going to shift toward a Christian nationalist theocratic society whichever sect becomes dominant is unclear whether it's puritanical or Calvinist, Mormon etc. My money is on catholics right now. Eventually that too will run its course after however long it needs to. But rationalists and the liberal moment has passed due to elite capture.
