Depends on the work you have to do, I think. In my case it is vital to know what happens around and be actively participating even if you aren't asked directly. We are a automation and supervision devs for production lines - knowing everything is impossible by definition, but poking your face in the door of every individual machine and product team once in a while saves you months of work in the end. People who only obey orders tend to be slower, do more mistakes and require supervision because they lack perspective. Hence others don't like them.
That said some subcontractors are totally fine with meat automatons, would even say that they actively hire the type.
