It's caused by poverty and lack of economic growth. Don't feel so bad, Soviet economy was a shitshow and you went straight from command economy to capitalism without going through social demogracy where workers get a bigger part of the pie.

I don't think so. There are places in Russia that are economically doing pretty well. Some of my friends earn like 2-3k dollars per month which is on par with average europoor. And yet people there still have cavemen ethics.
