there are ways to make it better, but no perfect solutions. Housing is full of catch-22 like problems.
It's expensive in the places where people want to live. If you do things that make it more affordable, like build a huge resident tower of low-rent units, that can be filled full of poor people, that will make the neighborhood less desirable to be for everyone else. A different place become the place people want to live, and is unaffordable.
As for buying homes, that's the real catch-22. People who can't afford homes want them to be cheaper. But if houses became less expensive every year, instead of more expensive every year; you probably wouldn't want to buy one, cause it'd be a shitty investment compared to stocks/crypto/bonds/gold/cash. What they really want isn't for houses to be affordable. They want the housing market to crash, to buy homes at the bottom, and for the price to recover to record highs after they've already bought.
