Who cares? I'm alone usually on Halloween or the holidays too but I always find a way to celebrate in my own, cozy, little way. I'll usually a carve a Jack O'lantern a few days before and put it out on my front porch. Then, on Halloween night typically I'll help hand out candy and, when I get the free time, go light a little bonfire in the woods in the back of my house and listen to the neighbors play their spooky music (they do every year in my neighborhood). Then I'll go watch a horror film. It's a nice little ritual/tradition I have every year and I love it. I don't need other people. You don't need other people. Celebrate in your own way.

So my grandma is 93. She said when she was a little kid (in the 30s) that Halloween was a very big deal. Even more so than today. She said that they used to make their own costumes as in pic rel, her mother would make it for her.

She said that when you went trick-or-treating at that time people would actually invite you into their homes and make you do silly things and reward you with candy. She said one year while she was trick-or-treating with her brothers someone invite her in and made her do a dance for $0.5! Back then this was about what $10-$15 is now! She did the dance and he gave her the money and she used it go buy a whole bunch of candy bars!

I feel like covid ruined Halloween. The last couple of years I've been excited to hand out candy but there haven't been nearly as many trick-or-treaters as when I was a kid. Also, when kids do go out for Halloween they often go to "Trunk-or-treating" events where a bunch of people drive to a parking lot and hand out candy from the back of their car while the kids are escorted around by their parents.
Where's the fun in that? My favorite Halloween memories all involve doing mischievous things like TPing the house of an old lady down the street who handed out oranges instead of candy.
And YES, I DID take ALL of the candy when there was a bowl left out with a "take one" sign.

Halloween used to be my favorite holiday. Key words: used to. I'm too old to go trick or treating, and I can't dress up at work since it's a professional white collar office. Hell, kids don't even go trick or treating near me anymore, even in the ritzy richpipo neighborhoods.

I still like to go thrifting during this time since all the stores in my city put out all the weird clothes they had been saving all year, including some real high $$$ stuff I can resell to effectively double my paychecks for the 2 months leading up to halloween. Not that I would ever admit to this in polite company, tho.
