This is obviously correct but in terms of the mechanisms of addiction but it doesn't touch on why people become like this.
People become addicts because their baseline level of contentment and ability to engage meaningfully in the world and with people is low. In my case due to pretty severe childhood traumas.
If I didn't have the outlets of a pc, 4chan, video games etc and lived in the 80s or something growing up, it's very likely I would have died of a heroin overdose or something in my late teens. These escapes have essentially been my permanent life support for decades.
I did the opposite. Got a full time job, a gf, disconnected. And every day all I could think was "man I wish I was at home on my computer"
