I do think he was extremely evil, however I do not think it was "cartoonish". You are right to say that the zeitgeist (let's call it that) has this image of an irrationally evil man, like some sort of intrinsically evil human. Which is not true. However, I believe evil is, in essence, evil, no matter their jusfification. Just in the same way that goodness is essentially good, how virtues are good regardless of their consequences. What I mean to say is that, even if Hitler believed wholeheartedly that he was doing the right thing, he hasn't.
