0. (21yo).
Why save when buying a (decent) home costs 1.5 million?

Just spent 600 on a graphics card. Got a comfy gaming experience now

The most I saved was like 2.4k. Then I wised up and realized the long-term gains of having money saved wouldn't amount to much.

30yr old 2nd worlder. Have been working since 2023. Just got past 15000 Euro ($18k). Most of it is in safe investments generating 5-10% a year. My parents have a combined 200k Euro which I will inherit + one apartment or two. My goal is retirement when my parents die. It's achievable as long as I never buy a house and never have kids (don't want them anyway).
Anonymous No.82494600 [Report]
Lost my job. Both jobs I've had only paid me $10/hr I'm a goon for accepting such low pay. I was an enabler. I only have like $500 left, spending money every day. At least I bought a gaming PC and games before becoming a NEET again. I could feel 1000s hours of fun without spending another penny but I really want a girlfriend and want to die because there's no chance I'll ever find one and the AMP is over $200.

I don't know about them, but MY 'secret' was kind of like this:
>finished university at the end of 2016
>parents 'kinda' helped me get a job at a warehouse in mid-2017
Mind you, I'm about 28 at this point, so no way they were going to let me continue living under their roof
>"we need you out of this house A-double S-A-P. Find an apartment, ANY apartment, within the year"
>find an apartment near where I went to elementary school but also not far from the warehouse
>parents practically shove me out in March of 2018 into the new apartment
>no furniture, multiple plumbing issues, roaches, etc but it's about $600/month
>stick with it
and I've stuck with it since. The plumbing issues and roaches are...'under control' at this point, but most importantly, rent is still less than $1K a month for me. Really, most of my money goes to groceries, bills, and clothing. I admittedly would be saving more if I didn't grocery shop on the affluent side of town, but they have the only types of food and snacks I actually enjoy.

It really is a 'cultural' thing, apparently. Truth is, my parents initially 'kicked me out' the moment I turned 18 by putting me in the Air Force (from which I washed out), and then sent me to Job Corps...and then to go live with an aunt (who also kicked me out) two states away. I think the whole "Gone by 18" thing is something that needs to be studied, because there's this wild assumption that as soon as you hit 18, you need to already be fully-employed with a house, apartment, or at least in some kind of school (living on-campus) or in the military.

I'm 34 and in my current account I have about 20K, in savings I have I think 70K, in stocks I have anoter 70K but I never touch that for anything. So call it 90K (+70K). I did have another 150K up until about 2 years ago but 100K went on a house for my older sister and 50K went to a house for my parents.

I could make more money than I currently do if I worked harder and invested more wisely but what's the point, I think I am probably going to kill myself before I turn 40 so not like I need it.

Ok, pretend I'm absolutely retarded.... Can someone explain how/why exchange rates even work? "Why" is a dollar not a dollar in other parts of the world? In theory, to me, if say, one dollar is worth 600 yen, then they should have the same purchasing power, and there shouldn't really be a difference in how rich or poor one nation is, right? Or rather... if I need 5 dollars for something in America, why do I not just need the equivalent in local currency elsewhere (in a vacuum disregarding taxes and other costs).

29, I have nothing saved at all
I went on a manic episode and maxed out credit cards and was ok paying it down until interest rates went nuts, and I was forced to get a new car. Now any savings I had evaporated, I had to liquidate the small potatoes investment assets I had to make ends meet.

I attempt to save $100 per paycheck but it doesn't work, I always end up needing to pull it out for something. I'm trying to stop wasting money on beer though, so that might help since I was spending possibly $60 a week on it.

as an alcoholic, if you arent aware of how much youre spending its probably much more than you think
Anonymous No.82496608 [Report]
>>82496520
Yeah, kind of aware of that one... Since I tried keeping track of it once, thinking that seeing the growing number would help me stop spending the money, but instead I just felt ashamed of it and stopped tracking.
I figure though buying 4-5 12-15 packs a week and maybe two of them are $16+ craft beer, the rest $10 swill... Had to be around that number (though I was doing the thing where you get nice and drunk, panic because you think you'll run out of drinks before you're ready to sleep, and run out for more very often, not really looking at the prices by then).

901.94.
Was up past 4 grand a year ago. Got awarded moar 'bux, and it was going to become a problem if I breached the 6K savings limit, so I overspent on take-out deliveries, and bought 1.5K worth of gold coins. Though spending settled down, I had a problem cutting the take-outs way back, and was spending money on hot food rather than the potato snacks I use for poverty food. I also get at least six ten packs of beer each month (cheapest way) to cope.
That, plus having to buy a PS5 on short notice, even with Klarna spreading the cost, has dented my savings below a grand for the first time in a decade. I was down to 322 in June. If that's not bad enough, I'll have to drop 600 for a new laptop at some point in the next few months. My original hope was to buy a gold coin every nine weeks, but this past year has been a financial cluster-fuck. I had a dry July and even went back on potato snacks for a while to save money, but the five week months negated it. I'll only break even this month. Getting the balance back above a thousand before pay-day is very fucking slow going.
Sure, my coins have gone up in valuation by almost 600 in total, but I'm better off holding them.

You're confusing two things. A dollar is worth a dollar everywhere.

Exchange rate exist because people value different countries' currencies differently. Regardless of where you are, for sure you'd rather have dollars than Venezuelan Bolivars, which is why dollar is worth more.

But the purchasing power of a dollar is different in different places because prices of all goods are different. If you want to rent an apartment in New York it'll cost you more than in Middleofnowhere, Idaho. So your dollar has more purchasing power in Idaho than it has in New York, because for the same amount of dollars you can pay more rent in Idaho. But internet might be more expensive in Idaho because they don't have the infrastructure. So it's a bit complicated to actually compare the purchasing power, and it depends on what you personally buy.
