I miss it. I miss it all so much. What happened?

Where did all the goodness go?

One of my favorite video games is the original Max Payne. There's some good narration and story that gets overlooked too often. In the game, Max points out that the apocalypse is something different for everyone. It's not a war or a comet or plague or something like that. It's something that happens and life is never the same after, it's never as good.

For me personally, I think it was 2001. I got ghosted by the love of my life and my parent's split up shortly after, which created a bunch of other problems. I remember thinking, I'm never really going to recover from this.

That's true. Experiencing loss and decay in real time is the vision of apocalypse. I was too young to actually remember having any real joyous childlike enthusiasm or optimism, whatever you may call it. Retrospectively my family described talking to me as a child as if I was a cold, irritable, curt and dismissive adult.
