can the LGS tell if I'm buying the gun to blow my brains out?
I'm really nervous they'll call the police or something and throw me in the psych ward
have any of you ever bought a gun? what's the process?

What state are you in? Look up the gun laws of your state. If in a gun friendly state you go in, select the weapon you want. Mention home defense or range shooting, nothing else. Don't point guns at anyone or yourself. Then you'll fill out an ATF form, basically it states that you won't use the gun to commit crimes, making a straw purchase for someone who can't or other things. This merely so they can nail you with other felonies if you do do these things. You can provide your ssn if you want, especially if you have a common name to speed up the process. If approved then you walk out with your gun and whatever ammo you bought.

that said, please don't hurt yourself.

in California supposedly the process is just "take the Firearm Safety Certificate exam (do this at the LGS), then wait 10 days for your gun" but I'm wanting to hear about specific experiences and gotchas

Well don't act crazy in the store, dress normal, remove any piercings, just make yourself appear as normal as possible. I don't know about cali forms but the standard form everywhere is

Name
address
SSN (optional)
are you a citizen
are you a felon, dishonorably discharged from the military or fugitive from justice
have you been charged with domestic violence
have you ever been involuntarily held in a mental institution (3 day hold)
are you making a straw purchase (buying the gun for someone else)
do you intend to sell the gun within a year of buying it

I live in a gun friendly state so I just walked in, selected my gun, filled out the form. Waited like 5 minutes for an approval (this might take longer if you don't provide ssn, I did) while the clerk showed me other products then when approved pay and walk out with your firearm.

oh that sounds piss easy lol
would it be suspicious if I called ahead to ask about the process?

No, just mention you are a first time gun buyer, it's alright to be nervous a little, just not shaking like a leaf. This said, please please please don't harm yourself.

ok, thanks anon
sucks that there's a 10 day waiting period but I guess it's there for this exact reason

shit, how do I provide proof of residency if I live with my parents

Do you have a driver's license or state ID card? That's always worked for me.

I thought it was ID + proof of residency?
anyways, a gun haver friend tells me buying a fishing license works for proof of residency lol

That might just be a cali thing, but where I'm at just the state ID was all they needed. Just a piece of mail with your name and address on it would work as well. Surely you've gotten some junk mail.

it's a California thing
interestingly they accept 1, 2 and 10 day fishing licenses, but don't accept hunting licenses
you could buy a license just for one day to pass, though I'm pretty sure the seller will get suspicious and deny the sale

I have social anxiety so my hands shake when I have to talk to people in stores. Not the best thing for when you are trying to fill out gun forms but no one ever acknowledged it

Generally most gun shop clerks don't care as long as you pass the background checks. They care more about the gangster types coming in to buy guns for crimes than some nervous guy that might have jitters the first time he's buying a gun.

Rarely you might get a boomer who really, really cares (in reality he just saw a weakness and wants to bully you for it)

Don't shoot yourself. Use a different method so that they can't use your death as propaganda. Also you mentioned that you live with your parents - do you really want them to have to clean your splattered brains and blood off the ceiling?

i don't really care for firearm rights politics since it's more of a demographic issue than legislative
and also im planning on doing it somewhere secluded, there's a wildlife sanctuary nearby that's kind of peaceful
