But Griffith is motivated by the sacrifice of all the people who've died for him to realize his dream, and the understanding that failing to achieve it at any cost means they all died for nothing, and that their lives meant nothing. This is a guy who took it up the ass from a rich noble just so more people wouldn't have to die for him to get the money he needed. He's not selfish. If anything he's trapped on the course he takes by his own strong morals, at least up until the point of being captured and tortured.
