This all started because TikTok announced it was going to start censoring words like "rape" and "kill" but never actually did because of the backlash. But they also weren't very loud about backtracking because the announcement alone got people to stop using these terms so often, thus making the service friendlier to advertisers which was the whole point of doing this anyway.
People are willingly, preemptively censoring themselves purely out of abstract fear of retaliation from these companies. It's just mass paranoia at this point. It's that bad.
