Basic image generation is really easy, but to do it on your own computer you'll need an Nvidia GPU. It can be done with AMD GPUs but it's 100x more of a pain in the ass to get everything working. Alternatively, you could do it on websites that allow you to use the website owners' computer hardware instead. Most people choose Civitai for that, and you could technically use it without paying any money. When you use a website instead of your own computer hardware you'll have some limitations. Some really useful additional processing simply isn't available on Civitai. I'm pretty sure they don't have an AI image upscaler, for example. Last time I checked, they didn't have inpainting either, which allows you to paint over any specific part of an image you want, then you can generate something over that specific part. Inpainting is extremely useful because your initial image generations will pretty much always have errors of many different types, and when you use inpainting to focus all the attention on one little thing, it makes that one little thing look way better. The best looking AI art almost always has loads of extra work done to it through inpainting, manual editing in photoshop, or even manual drawing from a real artist over some parts. It must be a blast using AI as a real artist. The best I can do is inpainting and photoshop editing to make things look better
