If that were true there wouldn't be so many illegals in the first place because we would've developed easier ways to gain American citizenship through the 'right' path. Instead we intentionally kept the process stringent, expensive and difficult in order to selectively keep as many foreigners out as possible. Or at least the wrong types of foreigners. We gave ICE the biggest budget increase in its history and when they started arresting and detaining people without due process we rationalized it with circular logic like "criminals don't deserve due process anyway." We passed legislation allowing ICE to racially profile and then subsequently allowed approximately 1,200 detainees, people we aren't really sure are American citizens or not, quietly disappear from the public tracking systems specifically designed to prevent things like this from happening. They weren't deported, we straight up do not know where they are.
The portion of Latinos that voted from Trump did so because of the economic position they were in, in spite of his rhetoric regarding their belonging here, not because of it.
