churches majorly rely on indoctrinating their patrons before they have the opportunity to learn to reason about the world they live in. by the time they're learning actual science in middle school they have already formed an identity around their faith. instead of using well proven science to form their worldview they are put in the position where they have to balance their faith with actual fact. this stunts their intellectual growth and gets in the way of true progress as a society. that's why things like basic biology and evolution, our understanding of our earth and the cosmos, etc. are still controversial among religious populations. some parents will disown their kids and throw them out of their houses over them accepting scientific beliefs.
furthermore, pretending to be some moral authority over shit we can figure out on our own pits other religions against each other and causes disharmony between peoples. some people credit religion for the progression of our society, and in a way i will concede that point in that it gives you a larger "in group" to belong to. but many times they just hamper progress and encourage you to accept teachings of the bible rather than thinking critically about moral dilemmas and adjusting your views to the wider world.
